The NYC grocery field guide
Read the quantity.
Count the whole purchase.
A multi-buy asks you to consider more than a package price. Before adding extra groceries, check what you must buy, what qualifies and whether the full purchase makes sense for your list.
Compare grocery pricesFree comparison starts with grocery staples.
Build your shopping list on the map, then compare.
What you wanted.
What the offer asks.
- Original list
- The pasta you planned to buy
- Qualifying packs
- Sizes and varieties named in the offer
- Required purchase
- Every pack needed for the advertised terms
- Remaining food
- A planned use for anything beyond your list
Copy the actual terms into your notes. This example sets up the decision without assuming a store's offer rules.
Check the offer, calculate the purchase and decide what happens to the extras.
Read the requirement before counting savings.
Find the wording that explains how the offer works. Does it state a required quantity? Can you mix eligible varieties? Is a card or clipped coupon involved? Do not infer the answer from a large headline alone.
Write the requirement in an ordinary sentence beside the item. For example: buy the stated quantity of eligible packs using the required card. Leave any missing detail marked as a question. Ask the store whether a smaller purchase receives the advertised rate before using that rate in your plan.
Note what you would buy if the offer did not apply. That gives you a practical choice if the qualifying size is missing or the requirement does not fit your shop.
Check which packages belong in the offer.
Match the product name, net quantity and variety against the terms. Packages beside a promotional sign can look alike. Read the package you are holding rather than carrying the offer across to a similar item.
| Detail | Question to answer | If unclear |
|---|---|---|
| Product | Is this variety included? | Check the offer wording |
| Size | Does this net quantity qualify? | Read the package |
| Quantity | What must be bought together? | Ask the store |
| Conditions | Is a card or coupon required? | Confirm before paying |
Do the same check when mixing flavors or brands. Treat each substitution as a fresh match instead of assuming every nearby pack qualifies.
Calculate the entire purchase.
Write the amount you would pay for all required packages. Then record the total qualifying quantity. For a unit comparison, divide that purchase total by the total quantity using a consistent unit.
The NIST Unit Pricing Guide addresses conditional and tiered prices alongside consistent unit measures. Keep the condition attached to your result so you can compare it with an ordinary purchase fairly.
Compare the full checkout commitment with your fallback. A useful rate per unit still leaves you buying every required package. For help reading the quantities, see the unit-price guide.
Give every extra package a job.
Before accepting the required quantity, name where the extra food will go. Which meal or regular household use will take it? Is there room where it belongs? Is this an item you already buy, or would the promotion create a new purchase?
The FDA's food-waste tips recommend planning a list and buying what you need, with caution around bulk perishables. Use that as a reason to pause, especially when the extra packages are outside your usual routine.
- UseName a realistic purpose for the extra food.
- SpaceIdentify room before bringing it home.
- BudgetKeep the full purchase within this trip's plan.
- DecisionKeep the original quantity if the extra purchase does not fit.

Check the details behind an offer and carry its required quantity into your written plan. Confirm unclear terms with the store before making the full purchase.

Do multi-buy signs always require the stated quantity?
Read the specific terms or ask the store. This guide does not assume a shared rule across promotions.
Should I add items just to complete an offer?
Only consider the full purchase after checking its cost, conditions and usefulness to you. Keeping your planned quantity remains an option.
