The NYC grocery field guide

Shop for the
trip home.

An advertised grocery offer is useful only if the trip works for you. Plan the list, carrying load and journey together before choosing a store or a larger pack.

Before you go

Compare the groceries
and the journey that comes with them.

01

Start with what you can carry.

Think through the return trip before looking at bulk packs. Include the bags you already have, the walk home and any stairs or transfers that matter to you. Set your own comfortable carrying limit; there is no single useful bag count for every shopper.

Put the largest and heaviest planned items on the list first. Then decide what else fits. A package you cannot reasonably bring home does not belong in this trip's comparison.

02

Put amounts beside the groceries.

Check what is already in the kitchen and write what you need before the next shop. The FDA's food-waste tips recommend a shopping list and buying the amount needed. Use that as the starting point before considering an advertised larger quantity.

New York State's Money Savings Guide recommends checking circulars and comparing unit prices. Keep both the package amount and the purchase conditions in view. A favorable unit comparison still has to fit your list and carrying plan.

03

Compare stores you would actually visit.

Begin with your usual store and a realistic alternative. Browse the relevant borough in SwiftBurst, then inspect the locations behind an advertised price. Verify the intended store and the offer's dates and conditions before relying on it.

04

Count the journey beside the groceries.

Keep your travel notes beside the usable grocery subtotal. Do not let a difference between advertised items stand in for the whole cost of shopping.

  • FareDoes this store add a paid journey you would otherwise avoid?
  • TimeCan you shop and return within the time you have?
  • BagsCan you manage the planned load through the whole return trip?
  • Extra stopWhat item makes another store worth visiting today?

Use your own current travel information. This guide does not supply fares, schedules or a route plan.

05

Leave yourself a simpler backup.

Choose what you will do if an offer cannot be used or the trip becomes impractical. That might mean using the usual store, buying a smaller planned amount or leaving an optional item for a later shop.

Keep the essential list visible

Mark the items you need for the trip to feel complete. Keep optional purchases separate so the return journey does not grow one offer at a time.

Now use your list

Search for the groceries on your list on the map. Add any results you want to your shopping list, then open the free comparison. With an empty list, the comparison starts with grocery staples.

Choose a trip that fits your time and carrying plan. For another possible stop, use the same-list checks in the shopping-list guide.

A few fair questions

Before you head out.

Is the biggest package always the right choice?

Compare the unit price, then decide whether you need the quantity and can bring it home. Package size is part of the decision.

Does an advertised offer guarantee availability?

No. Check availability with the store when it matters to your trip.

Can I compare without paying?

The comparison is free. Exclusive Deal Alerts is a separate, optional paid email service.
