The NYC grocery field guide
Same fish. Same cut.
A clearer comparison.
Fish offers can hide a different species, a whole fish or a frozen bag behind a tempting headline. Write the exact fish and cut you would buy before comparing NYC stores.
Compare grocery pricesFree comparison starts with grocery staples.
Build your shopping list on the map, then compare.
Write more
than fish.
- Species
- The fish your meal calls for
- Cut
- Fillet, with skin preference recorded
- Form
- Fresh, previously frozen or frozen
- Amount
- Weight needed for the meal
A fillet and a whole fish are different purchases.Keep preparation work beside the quoted price.
Identify the fish before comparing the offer.
Keep the species on the list.
If you want salmon, do not let a generic fish headline stand in for the species and product on the shelf. Keep any required type, production label or brand beside the name. If another fish works for your recipe, write it as an alternative on a separate line.
Changing species may be a perfectly reasonable dinner choice. It does not establish a price difference for the same item. Keep the original plan visible so you can see what changed.
Match the cut before the pound.
Whole fish, steaks, skin-on fillets and skinless portions should not collapse into one comparison. Bones, skin and trimming affect what you bring to the table, while counter preparation may affect what you need to do at home.
| Form | Useful comparison | Question to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Whole fish | Same species and whole-fish weight | Is cleaning included, and when is it weighed? |
| Fillet | Same species and skin treatment | Is the quoted unit per pound or per tray? |
| Portion pack | Same fish and total net weight | Are the pieces a suitable size for the meal? |
| Breaded fish | Separate prepared-food comparison | Does the package include coating or sauce? |
Compare matching weights using the consistent-unit approach in the NIST Unit Pricing Guide. A per-pound sign still leaves the final package total to check.
Confirm the approximate weight you want and how the store charges for preparation. Do not assume every counter follows the same policy.
Keep fresh and frozen labels visible.
The FDA seafood guide distinguishes fresh, previously frozen and frozen seafood. Copy the label instead of guessing from its place in the display. For frozen products, also check package condition using the FDA's buying guidance.
Choose the form that fits your preparation plan. A bulk frozen bag is a different checkout commitment from a counter portion, even when you can compare the same species by weight.
Read the offer before changing stores.
- ProductDoes the ad specify the species, cut and eligible package?
- QuantityIs the price per pound, per piece or for a fixed bag?
- TermsAre membership, a coupon or a minimum purchase required?
- LocationDoes the promotion cover the store on your route?
If the ad leaves a material detail unclear, keep the comparison incomplete until the store answers it.
Pick the fish.
Then pick the stop.
Search for fish on the map. Add any results you want to your shopping list, then open the free comparison. With an empty list, the comparison starts with grocery staples.
Check available matches against your species, cut and weight requirements. Plan a route that suits the purchase and follow the package's handling instructions.

Is a lower per-pound whole-fish price a direct fillet comparison?
No. You need to account for the different product form and preparation. Keep whole fish and fillets on separate lines.
Will the comparison show every fish-counter price?
No. An advertised match may be missing. Check the counter price and availability directly with the store.
