The NYC grocery field guide
Match the beans.
Check the liquid.
Cheap canned beans can make a useful pantry purchase. Compare the beans you will actually use, with the can weight and preparation visible, before switching NYC grocery stores.
Compare grocery pricesFree comparison starts with grocery staples.
Build your shopping list on the map, then compare.
Put the variety
on the list.
- Beans
- Black beans
- Preparation
- Plain, not refried or a prepared soup
- Amount
- Enough cans for your planned meals
- Keep fixed
- Any required product labels
Net weight does not tell you drained yield.Keep that difference visible when comparing products you intend to drain.
Compare the same preparation.
Do not count the can twice.
Decide which beans can substitute.
Write the variety: black beans, chickpeas, cannellini or another type. If several varieties work in your meal, record that flexibility. If a recipe depends on one variety, compare that variety first.
Then match the preparation. Goya's canned range lists whole beans, refried beans, soup and seasoned beans as distinct products. A bargain on soup does not supply the same ingredient as a can of plain whole beans.
If organic, a particular salt formulation or another requirement matters to your purchase, keep it fixed. The Goya organic black bean page identifies its ingredients and product type. Use the label of the can you are actually buying to confirm a match.
Know what the stated weight covers.
The FDA Food Labeling Guide, net-quantity section, explains that added liquid is usually part of a food's labeled net quantity. For canned beans, do not treat the front-label weight as the amount of drained beans without separate supporting information.
For similar canned products, price per net ounce gives a useful labeled-package comparison. It does not establish which brand yields more beans after draining. If that is the decision you need to make, look for comparable drained information or leave that part unresolved.
| Products | Compare on | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Plain canned beans of the same variety | Net weight and package price | Identical drained yield |
| Multipacks of the same cans | Can count multiplied by each can's weight | The outer carton is one can |
| Plain and seasoned beans | Separate acceptable alternatives | Equal ingredients or preparation |
| Dried and canned beans | Separate cooking plans and quantities | Equal usable amounts from equal package weights |
Count the whole purchase.
If your meal needs several cans, compare that number at each store. For a case, check the number and size of inner cans. Also check whether a multi-buy requires more cans than the meal needs.
Keep extra quantity visible. Decide whether it fits your budget, carrying bags and meals before calling it a better buy.
Check the conditions on the offer.
- Included varietiesDoes your bean type qualify?
- Package sizeIs this the can weight shown in the advertisement?
- AccessIs a loyalty card or clipped coupon required?
- Purchase rulesIs the amount conditional on buying several items?
Keep the unknowns on your list.
A missing can size prevents a unit comparison. A missing advertised price stays unknown. Check the retailer if that gap changes your trip.
Check the pantry.
Then compare the shop.
Search for canned beans on the map. Add any results you want to your shopping list, then open the free comparison. With an empty list, the comparison starts with grocery staples.
Use matching prices where available, and keep unpriced items visible when deciding whether a different store earns the journey.

Can I compare canned and dried beans by package weight?
Keep them separate. One is a ready canned ingredient and the other requires a different preparation plan. Equal package weights do not establish equal finished quantities.
Does the comparison guarantee this variety is in stock?
No. Check the exact product and location before relying on an offer for a special trip.
