The NYC grocery field guide
Broccoli crowns or cuts.
Match what goes on the plate.
The broccoli picture on a circular does not tell you whether the price covers a bunch, a pound or a bag of florets. Start with the form you want to cook.

Build your shopping list on the map, then compare.
Put the cut

These are alternatives for a meal, not identical products.Keep the preparation and the purchased weight visible.
Match the cut, then the weight, then the trip.
A crown is not a bunch.
Read the wording under the photograph. A bunch with long stems, a trimmed crown and a tray of loose florets involve different preparation. If you use the stems in soup, keep that in your decision. If you only want florets, ask whether the extra trimming fits tonight's plan.
Do not turn the size of the pictured head into a weight estimate. An each-priced offer needs the actual weight before you can compare it with a per-pound price.
Buying stems you intend to use is different from buying stems you usually discard. Decide before calling either form better value.
Read the frozen bag's cut.
The USDA's frozen broccoli standards distinguish florets, chopped broccoli, cut broccoli and other styles. Copy the actual package wording. A bag of chopped broccoli does not become a bag of florets because both show green pieces on the front.
| Product | Compare by | Check before accepting a swap |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh crowns | Pound | Actual weight and how much stem remains |
| Fresh bunch | Pound, after weighing | Stems included and preparation needed |
| Plain frozen florets | Ounce or pound | Net weight and matching cut |
| Broccoli with sauce | Package and net weight | Added sauce and whether it suits the meal |
Use one weight unit across the matching products, following the approach in the NIST Unit Pricing Guide. Keep sauce mixes outside a plain-broccoli comparison.
Count every bag required by the offer.
A freezer offer can require a purchase quantity that is larger than your list. Record the whole checkout commitment before comparing it with loose produce.
- SizeDoes the promoted bag match the weight you found?
- VarietyAre florets included, or only a different cut?
- ConditionsIs a clipped coupon, loyalty card or multi-buy required?
- RoomCan the required bags fit in your freezer?
Keep a missing broccoli price blank. Another vegetable's offer cannot fill that gap.
Match the meal.
Then compare the run.
Search for broccoli on the map. Add any results you want to your shopping list, then open the free comparison. With an empty list, the comparison starts with grocery staples.
Check each available offer's form, unit and store before using it. A separate NYC grocery stop has to fit your route, carrying space and total list.

Can I compare fresh and frozen broccoli?
Yes, as clearly labeled meal alternatives. Match the purchased weight where possible and keep trimming, sauce and cut differences visible.
Does a missing result mean the store has no broccoli?
No. An unavailable advertised price tells you nothing certain about shelf stock. Check with the store.
